BEIJING, Sept 16, 2007 (AFP) - Chile's resurgent Fernando Gonzalez left his dismal summer season behind on Sunday, defeating Spain's Tommy Robredo to win the China Open, his first title in two years.

The world number seven defeated third seed Robredo 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at the Beijing tennis centre, raising a trophy for the first time since November 2005 in Basel.

"It's great to finally win a title," said the 27-year-old second seed. "I think I can still improve my game but I'm so happy to return to my best."

Gonzalez and Robredo are fighting for one of five places remaining in the eight-man season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai in November. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and US Open finalist Novak Djokovic have already qualified.

Gonzalez moved up to seventh in the ATP points race, while Robredo, who has failed to impress since winning a clay title two months ago in Poland, stands 11th in the chase.

The Chilean finally made good in his third final of the year, after finishing runner-up to Federer at the Australian Open and to Nadal in Rome.

He improved to 8-10 in career finals. It was his second hardcourt title after Auckland in January 2005. Gonzalez also has five clay court wins, and one, in Basel, on indoor carpet.

Gonzalez took a 3-2 advantage over Robredo in head-to-head match-ups. The Spaniard had won the previous two meetings, both on clay.
