Liao Guiming continues his bid to win the Omega Order of Merit for the first time at this week’s inaugural Tianjin Championship, the penultimate event of this year’s Omega China Tour.
The cheeky-smiling Liao is among the pre-tournament favourites with big-hitting Yuan Hao, Li Chao, the two-time Omega Order of Merit champion, and Chinese Taipei invites Hsu Mong-nan and Tsai Chi-huang, victorious at this month’s Luxehills Golf Championship.
Liao is on a mission after his RMB90,000 paycheque for finishing runner-up to Tsai in Chengdu helped him leapfrog Zhang Lianwei to the top of the current money list with RMB349,450.
The 31-year-old even chose to miss last week’s co-sanctioned KEB Invitational in Korea in order to focus on the upcoming RMB800,000 Tianjin event at the 36-hole Tianjin Yangliuqing Golf Club.
“I realise I’ve got a good chance to win the Omega Order of Merit so I want to give myself the best chance. The course here is beautiful,” said Liao, who has familiarised himself with the tree-lined Yangliuqing layout since arriving in Tianjin, the historic port city southeast of Beijing, last Thursday.
“I didn’t go to Korea last week because I wanted to prepare for this event. I’ve been practising hard, getting plenty of rest and I’m really geared up for the last two events of the Tour.”
