Michael Wong, aka Wong Man-Tak,is one of Hong Kong’s most recognized entertainers.His film career features over 70 motion pictures. He also pursues an illustriousmusic path, which started in Thailandwith an album entitled ‘From Far away’ that sold over a million copies in 1993.
Michael was the first nonCantonese-speaking actor to gain success in the Hong Kongfilm industry. His debuts took place in the mid-80s in the kung fu productions‘Invincible Obsessed Fighters’ (1983) and ‘In the Line of Duty’ (1985). In the samegenre, Michael starred alongside Michelle Yoeh in ‘Royal Warriors’ (1996) and BrandonLee in ‘Legacy of Rage’ (1987), which established his early-career image as a toughoutsider。
‘Final Option’ (1994) directed by Gordon Chan andnominated for several Hong Kong Awards in 1995, would make Wong a major movie starin Hong Kong. His character, the implacable SDU Commander Stone Wong, reappearedin a prequel ‘First Option’ (1996) and the 2002 reprise ‘New Option’。
In 1996, Michael starred in John Woo's “Once a Thief”, a 22-episode seriesbroadcasted on Canadian TV. A year later, Michael appeared in Lee-Chi Ngai’s graceful“Lost and Found” alongside Kelly Chen. More recently, Kelly would come and performas a guest singer on the song ‘Quando Quando Quando’ on Michael’s 2008 album “CoolRhythm”, a jazzy selection of 11 classic songs recorded with ‘The Michael Wong BigBand’。
Michael’s most notable filmis the 1998 film Beast Cops, which won the Best Film prize at the Hong Kong FilmAwards. In 2000, Wong made his debut as a director With ‘Miles Apart’, which healso produced and starred in. He performed his latest leading role in 2009 blockbuster”Overheard”, where he plays the powerful and most memorable character “Will Ma”.Wong says, « the roles keep getting better and better! »。
Presently, Michael devotesmuch of his time to various charities. He recently was named ‘Peace Ambassador’for the’ Peace International Foundation’. He is also a licensed commercial pilotfor helicopters and leads the weekly ‘Operation Flying Eagle’, Hong Kong’s first regular flying program for young people.Michael initiated this program in 2000 with the HK Cadet Corps. Apollo 17 astronautGene Cernan endorsed it in 2006.
Michael also works with manyof the world’s top fashion and watch brands, including Hugo Boss and Omega, andhas done over 20 major celebrity endorsement campaigns. He regularly sings withthe Michael Wong Big Band and continues to entertain audiences around the worldwith his unique charismatic style and warm heart。
