China’s Ye Liying put herself in contention to win her second tournament in as many weeks when she shot a five-under 67 today in the second round of the US$50,000 Orient Masters Qingdao to take a three-shot lead over compatriot Yang Taoli.
As overnight leader Yang struggled to a 73 in her round that included three bogeys on the back nine, Ye, the winner of the Xingjiang Challenge last week in Urumchi, opened with a birdie, one of six on the day, against a lone bogey at the 14th hole.
Through 36 holes, Ye was an aggregate five-under 139.
Mainlander Zhong Xiaolong (74) and South Korea’s Kim Eun-jeong (73) were equal third, seven off the pace at Orient Qingdao Country Club, while Zhang Jing (73) was fifth, a shot further back.
The Shanghai-based Ye, winner of the Midea China Ladies’ Classic in January, carded four birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 32 and added another two birdies on the back while dropping only one shot for the low round of the tournament.
“Today my putting was very good and my approach shots were also good. I made six birdies and my only bogey was a three-putt, so nearly everything was going my way,” said the 29-year-old, still in search of her first Orient Masters Tour win.
“On the 15th I chipped in from 30 yards for birdie with my wedge and that provided a good sign for tomorrow. Success is half way there so tomorrow I just need to play my game and I will be okay.”
