Qingdao: Following five runner-up or equal runner-up finishes on the Orient Masters Tour over the past two years, Yang Taoli is confident she can end her winless streak on China’s premier women’s circuit when the US$50,000 Orient Masters Qingdao tees off on Wednesday in Shandong Province.
The 24-year-old Sichuan native is coming off a runner-up finish last week at the Xinjiang Challenge where she finished six shots behind compatriot Ye Liying in the one day, 36-hole event in Urumchi. Over the summer, Yang faced topped competition when she played in the Evian Masters in Paris on the Ladies European Tour and captured yet another runner-up finish when she tied with Danielle Montgomerie at the Binhai Open in Shanghai last month.
With Yang Hongmei, winner of first two Orient Masters legs in Beijing and Wenzhou this year, skipping the Qingdao event for personal reasons, Yang said her main competition this week would come from six Koreans in the field, as well as three Thais and some rising Chinese talent.
“After the Xingjiang Challenge I had a two day rest and now I feel very good,” Yang said. “Today, I played 18 holes and I feel the course is longer than last year because of the wind. All the par-threes are too long for me and on the 14th I had to use a three-wood.
“Now my form is good but my short game needs improving. This year I have much more experience and I’m looking forward to win. I know Yang Hongmei is not here this week but the Korean players are and they are very strong. The competition this week will be intense.”
