　　After graduating from Syracuse University, Burton worked as a sports reporter before joining the Miller Brewing Company in 1980 where among other duties, he managed Miller Lite’s award-winning "Taste Great, Less Filling" advertising campaign. After 12 years at Miller, Burton was named vice-president with Clarion Performance

　　Properties, a sports and entertainment marketing agency located just outside

　　New York City. His clients at Clarion included the National Football League

　　(NFL), Reebok, Gillette, Universal Studios and Sprint.

　　In 1995 Burton joined the University of Oregon’s James H. Warsaw Sports Marketing Centre staff as a lecturer and was the Woodard Family Senior Instructor of Sports Marketing. He won multiple awards for excellence in the classroom. He served as the director and executive director of the Warsaw Centre (housed in Oregon's Lundquist College of Business) from 1998 – 2003 and helped found the FUON international sports marketing program with Fudan University and NIKE in Shanghai, China.

　　During that period, Burton acted as a marketing consultant to the Australian National Basketball League (NBL), the NFL, National Hockey League (NHL), Japanese Pro

　　Soccer League (J League), Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and global corporations such as NIKE, Visa and IMG.

　　He also became a regular media commentator on sports business issues writing in publications throughout the United States for publications including the New York Times, New York Post, The Oregonian, Business Week Online, Sports Business Journal, Ad Age, Stadia and Sport Business International. Burton also hosted a TV show called The Business of Sport on Action Sports Cable Network and broadcast weekly sports business segments on The Sporting News Radio Network.

　　In 2003, Burton was appointed to the newly created role of NBL Commissioner. Within months of making the move to Australia, he re-signed Fox Sports to a five-year partnership as official cable network of the NBL and unveiled an exciting new finals format. In September 2004, Burton introduced global healthcare, lifestyle and technology giant Philips as the League’s official naming rights partner and launched the Philips Championship for the 2004/05 season. The NBL also signed global partners NIKE, Molten and Virgin Airlines to round out their sponsorship roster for 2004/05.
