Beijing’s First Annual Golf Tournament at China’s Premier Golf Course

The 2007 Pine Valley Beijing Open will be hosted at the Pine Valley Golf Resort & Country Club from April 23rd to 29th. The competition is sanctioned by the Asian Tour & China Golf Association (CGA) and represents the first annual elite-level golf tournament to be held in Beijing. The competition will feature over 156 players from 30 countries, including some of China’s most prominent golfers. Pine Valley has played host for many international and domestic golf events, namely the 2004 Volkswagen Masters and 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic. For the Pine Valley Beijing Open, the Ruoy Chai Group has invested over 80,000,000 RMB and cooperated with the Asian Tour and CGA to transform the Pine Valley Beijing Open into a top-tier Asian Tour and international golf event.
The Pine Valley Beijing Open promises great performances by many star players including the top four players in the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit. The Asian Tour players have achieved great success in the most recent series of international tournaments. Their appearances will conclude a whirlwind of international golf tournaments in China during the month of April. The Pine Valley Beijing Open will feature South-African player—Anton Haig, who ranks first in the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, and in March received the honor of best player on the European Tour. Also joining the tournament will be Chapchai Nirat from Thailand, who after emerging victorious in the TCL classic, has risen to rank third on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit. Additionally, the star players who will be present include Thaworn Wiratchant from Thailand; Australian player Terry Pilkadaris; Airil Rizman Zahari from Malaysia, and American player Jason Knutzon.
Chinese golf players, Zhang Lianwei and Liang Wenchong, will lead other Chinese players in preparation for the tournament. In 2003, Zhang Lianwei won the Singapore Masters, a jointly-sanctioned event by both the Asian Tour and the European Tour. He was the first mainland Chinese player to win the European tour. In the same year, he also won the Volvo China Open and finished second on the Order of Merit behind Arjun Atwal, India’s star golfer. Zhang is now recognized as one of the premier professional golf players in China.
Liang Wenchong, a rising golf star in China, has made had the most recent attention-grabbing achievements in China, winning the Singapore Masters and becoming the second Chinese player to win a jointly-sanctioned event by the Asian Tour and the European Tour (behind Zhang Lianwei). Currently, Liang ranks the 2nd on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.
An additional last-minute surprise is the confirmation of John Daly, a well-known American player known to the Chinese as “the Lion,” will appear at the Pine Valley Beijing Open and will compete with the Asia’s top players following his play at the BMW Open. He is a legendary figure in golf, winning 2 majors and 5 PGA tours. Currently, he is one of the most popular golf players, and often brings refreshment to the sport with his animated actions on the golf course. As one of the sports most prominent players, John Daly has been a longest driver on PGA tour for the past 10 seasons (from 1991 to 1993, 1995 to 2002).
John Daly expects to enjoy his tour in China, and tournament organizers hope the Chinese audience will witness with their own eyes the magnificence of this star player. Of course, amazing performances are also expected from the Chinese players Zhang Lianwei and Liang Wenchong.
