“I was most impressed with the way I reacted to my bogey, as normally I get mad, but not this time. Today, I concentrated hole by hole, which is why I did well,” said the 27-year-old, sixth in last year’s Omega Order of Merit.
“I’m happy to shoot in the 60s again, although I missed a lot of putts. I like this course because I’m usually hitting no more than a nine-iron into any green, so I’m getting close to the flag most times.”
Liao Guiming, winner of May’s Sofitel Golf Championship and currently second on the Omega Order of Merit, moved into contention with a bogey-free 68 that put the 31-year-old four-under and in a share of sixth place with Liu Guojie (70) and Zhou Xunshu (71).
Chengdu’s Huang Mingjie saw his hopes of winning his maiden Tour event fade with a 75 that put him three-over. Fellow Chengdu native Yang Taoli, the first female to make the cut on the Tour, was unable to repeat the feat in front of her home fans after following an opening 77 with a 76 to go nine-over.
The Luxehills Golf Championship was rescheduled from its original June dates following the Sichuan Earthquake on May 12. Zhang Lianwei and Li Chao, who have won 14 of the 23 events held since the circuit started in 2005, are competing in this week’s Omega European Masters on the European Tour.
