August 18, 2008: Liao Guiming’s bid to become the first player other than Li Chao and Zhang Lianwei to win the Omega China Tour’s Order of Merit will continue when the circuit resumes with the RMB800,000 Luxehills Golf Championship in Chengdu from September 4-7.
The Luxehills tournament, which was postponed from its original June dates due to the Sichuan Earthquake on May 12, will tee off the latter part of this year’s Omega China Tour following a three-month break for the Olympics.
Liao’s dramatic play-off victory over Zhang Lianwei in May’s Sofitel Golf Championship in Nanjing was his first professional victory and made him the fifth different champion in the Omega China Tour’s first five events of the year.
It was a richly deserved victory for the Fujian-born 31-year-old, who was joint runner-up with Chen Xiaoma in the previous week’s Shanghai Championship, which then marked his ninth top-10 finish on Tour since 2005.
Boosted by his winner’s cheque for RMB150,000, Liao currently lies second in the Omega Order of Merit with RMB259,450, trailing Zhang, the 2006 winner, who leads the list with RMB330,000. Li Chao, the 2005 and 2007 Omega Order of Merit winner, is third with RMB200,750.
“I really want to try my best in the coming events and try to win the Omega Order of Merit. I will take it one tournament at a time, but if I have any chance, I will go for it,” said Liao, winner of the 2001 China Amateur Open.
